PETA asks Fishkill to change name
PETA has renewed their call for Fishkill, New York to change their name to something more animal friendly. They attempted this same stunt ten years ago. This, in spite of the fact that Fishkill was not originally intended to mean "kill fish". The Dutch originally settled the area, and "kill" is Dutch for "stream". So, it translates literally as "fish-stream".
Resident Willa Skinner, the town historian, said the area has been known as Fishkill since it was first settled.
"I don't know what's the matter with these people," Skinner said. "I think they don't mind a lot of ridicule.
"What about the other kills, like Otterkill, Beaverkill, Catskill?" she wondered.
