Can't sign on to windows
I couldn't get signed into my own laptop, so I used Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD/DVD. This is a nice solution if you have a PC running XP, 2003, or NT that you can't logon to. It allowed me to recover the files I needed and copy them off to a USB drive.

Last night was the first time I used Bart PE, but there are some other CD-based OSes and tools you might want to look into.
Knoppix is a Linux distribution that boots from the CD and loads into memory.
There's a good article about using anti-virus software in Knoppix at http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/wlg/5118 and at http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/knoppixhks/chapter/ (see Hack #78, 150 KB PDF).
An advantage of booting from Knoppix is that no Windows processes -- including any viruses or spyware -- are running. And any Windows malware won't infect Linux.
Another utility is the Ultimate Boot CD, which is a collection of diagnostic tools.
