Tennessee River Pop Quiz
1) What is the speed limit on the Tennessee River?
2) Is it legal to drink and drive a boat in Alabama and/or Tennessee?
3) Can you drive a Sea-Doo at night in Tennessee?
4) Does Tennessee have an open container law for automobiles?
Answers:
1) There is no speed limit on the Tennessee River, or on most of the nations waterways for that matter. There are some "No Wake" areas, but on the river, you can go as fast as you want.
2) Yes. In Alabama, "Drinking while boating is a choice." In Tennessee and Alabama, and in most states, there are no open container laws for boats.
3) It is illegal to operate a Personal Water Craft between the hours of sunset and sunrise in Tennessee.
4) As long as you're not driving, Tennessee law says you can drink alcohol in a moving vehicle.
The waterways of this country are the last frontier. The tree-huggers haven't shut them down yet. Get out there and play while you still can. Life is short. Play hard.
Update: Update: My buddy Goat down in Alabama told me I was mistaken on this, but I'm not clear that he's right. Even Kalifornia does not have an open container law for boats. "...there is no "open container" law for boats..." The California Department of Boating and Waterways " recommends that boaters do no drink alcohol while boating." However, it appears that in 2002, Utah became the first state to enact an open container law for boats, but it only applies to "moving boats". Texas does not have an open container law for boats.
