Pictures from the DNC: Day 02
On Tuesday afternoon, August 26, I met Rob Kiser at Johnny Rockets on the corner of 16th and Tremont, where he enjoyed some waffles from the vendor on the mall.
More in the extended entry below.
Below: As we passed 16th and Court, the Emily's List Gala Reception was letting out of the Sheraton Hotel. Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton were inside. One of my neighbors who had attended the Emily's List gathering later told me that there wasn't much difference between the $25 tickets and $25,000 tickets, as far as seat placement during the speeches was concerned.
There were two opposing groups outside the hotel, which I can only describe as anti-Christian and anti-abortion/anti-homosexual protesters.
I wonder if these guys (below) feel the same way about the Islamic fascists?
I should have made some "Allah Hates Gays" signs to pass out, just so I could watch the ensuing confusion between the multi-culturalists who won't criticize Muslims, and the Christian activists who hate Muslism and gays.
In addition, some "Homo-Sapienism Is A Sin" signs would also have added to the fun.
The gathering outside of the Sheraton was the only time all week that I felt violence was going to break out. We decided to head for the Civic Center park, on the east end of the mall.
This was the most sensible campaign slogan I saw all week.
These two women had covered their entire Volvo station wagon with Obama bumper stickers. I think they were the only thing holding the car together. At 16 miles per gallon, they were going to have to raise a lot of gas money to drive back to California.
Even a broken clock is right twice a day -- at least for Eastern Daylight Time. It was only 4:32 PM in Denver.
The pictures below were taken from a mock mosque, made of pictures the guy had taken in Iran. I didn't get a picture of the whole thing, since I was using my 75-300mm lens, and couldn't get back far enough, but you can see one here (scroll down). Here are my pictures from the inside:
The vendor, who stated she was voting for Obama, couldn't answer Rob's question about how she was supposed to defend Denver if Kalashnikov-type rifles were outlawed.
The "9/11 Was An Inside Job" rally makes me wish I had brought along an "Oklahoma City Was An Inside Job" sign, just to test the reaction.
We decided that we'd seen everything worth seeing at the Civic Center, so we started walking back toward the other end of downtown.
We passed the Hotel Treatro as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his entourage were coming out and getting into their vehicles.
For some reason, my camera locked up, and was flashing "BUSY" on the screen as I tried to take a picture of R.A.K. with R.F.K. Jr. Not having the time to troubleshoot what was going on -- because I wasn't about to tell Kennedy to wait -- I did the only thing I could, and cycled power to the camera. Fortunately, it worked, and you can see those pictures You can more of those those pictures here.
But the "busy" problem ended up plaguing me for much of the rest of the week, including when I was taking pictures of Senator Obama on Thursday.
