Lake Evergreen
We went back to Lake Evergreen today for a late season canoe trip. You can tell it's getting late in the season when you have to break the ice with your paddle to go anywhere. The lake was only about half-frozen by the time we launched the canoe. By the end of the day, all of the ice had melted, but Jennifer and Allie really liked canoeing through the ice. It wasn't thick - only a few millimeters I would think. But it makes a loud noise when the canoe scrapes across it. We chased "swimmy things" (muskrats) and fed the ducks and caught a couple of trout. The temperature was about 50 degrees F, but when the sun was out, it was actually pretty nice.

A Mallard drake emerges from the shallows and waddles across the ice to reach a favorite feeding spot. Unlike diving ducks, Mallards can't submerge completely, so they have to feed in water around 18" deep.
Unlike a duck, the Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) has no oil wick to oil his feathers. Because of this, he's able to swim underwater and catch fish, but he has to dry his wings every night before the sun goes down or he'll freeze to death.

where is the life jacket? should be on the kids, not in the Tahoe.

Actually, they were both wearing life preservers. Allie's was on under her jacket, believe it or not. Later, she got cold, so she took it off and put on a big orange one over her jacket. But they both were wearing them. Now - I doubt they would do much good because I think you'd freeze to death before you could make it to shore, but they were wearing them.
