Postcards from Nowhere: North Carolina

Jennifer and I have recently returned from her great-grandmother's 90th birthday party. We both had a great time. We ran into a lot of people I've not seen in 20 years. I didn't even recognize Scott Sutton when I saw him at first. Not because he's changed that much, just because I'm an idiot I think.

It was good to catch up with everyone. Jennifer was floored by the experience. She told me she thought that she had already met all of her relatives. So, this trip was an eye-opener for her. Hopefully we won't wait another 20 years before our return. No excuse in that, really.

These photos were taken in November of 2009 in the towns of Winston-Salem, Clemmons, Greensboro, and Raleigh North Carolina. The images were all captured on one of the following:

Note: All of my lenses are broken at this point, and I'm sending them back to Canon in the morning. More frustrating than I can say.

The images are compiled into a 20 Meg (3:55) Adobe Flash slideshow(ambulance.swf) that you should be able to open and view with any browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, etc.). To view the slideshow, just click on the photo above. If you want to view the slideshow as a Windows executable, you can play this version (ambulance.exe), and it allows you to play, pause, skip forward, backwards, etc.

Image post-processing was done in Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended. The slideshow was created using Imagematics Stillmotion Pro.

The soundtrack is Mr. Ambulance Driver by The Flaming Lips. I chose this song because it was in the movie Wedding Crashers and I thought it sounded pretty cool.

Lyrics in the extended entry.

Mr. Ambulance Driver Lyrics
Artist(Band):The Flaming Lips

Waiting... for the ambulance to come
Hoping that it doesn't come... too late
Hearing the sirens in the distance
Hold on help... Is on the way
Mr. Ambulance Driver
I'm right here beside her
Tho I'll live some how I've found
Mr. Ambulance Driver
I'm not a real survivor
Wishing that i was the one that...wasn't gonna be here anymore
The one that isn't here anymore
The one that isn't here anymore
Oh...we can't trade places
Our lives are strangely our own
Mr. Ambulance Driver
Tell Me...for everyone that dies someone new is born
Mr. Ambulance Driver
I'm right here beside her
And tho I'll live somehow I've found
Mr. Ambulance Driver
I'm not a real survivor
Cause I'm wishing that i was the one that...wasn't gonna be here anymore
Mr. Ambulance Driver
I'm right here beside her
And tho I'll live somehow I've found
Mr. Ambulance Driver
I'm not a real survivor
Cause I'm wishing that i was the one that...wasn't gonna be here anymore
The one that isn't here anymore
The one that isn't here anymore
(Waiting for the ambulance to come, who who whooo)x2

Fabulous! Too bad no pics from Saturday night, but this is great. Not at all the fiasco you had in mind, eh?

What happened? It stopped mid stream. Is this the end? BTW I loved seeing the pics of everyone and hate that I couldn't be there. First time I've seen Hallye in 2 months!!!

Love the photos! The family photo is incredible, yet again! So sorry I missed it - we will not wait another 20 years and I will be at the next one! Thanks for the great slideshow Rob!

I helped Molly see the rest of the slides. Good job on the picts. The flash on your camera made my hair look grey. Funny.

Thanks, Scott. Elise - It wasn't as painful as I'd imagined it might be. Molly, get a new computer. Jonathan - I stand by my colors. ;)
