Melanie Dunn, a 23-year-old single mother of 3 living in public housing left her 2-year-old and 3-year-old son home alone in Memphis. The dwelling caught on fire while the two boys were home alone.
Marilyn Wilson, the sister of the boys' mother Melanie Dunn, said she and Dunn left the boys home alone to go shopping. They were gone about an hour when they got a call about the fire.
Wilson sain Dunn doesn't leave the children home alone "all the time".
"Some kind of way they sot something on fire. I don't know how it happened," Wilson said, "becuz we weren't there."
Wilson, said she had no regrets about leaving the children home alone. "No. I really don't you know...because...I mean...if dey hadda been dere by deirselfs...but i dunno how de house got caught on fire. I dono if de boys sot it on fire. Or somebody thowed something in there to set it on fire. I really need to get in there and see did my purse burnt up. Cause I had my food stamp card and everything in there."
Both children have since died. The DA has declined to file charges against the mother.
