Poor Timmy

Well, the good news is, that skunk won't be bothering us any more. The bad news is, Timmy got sprayed pretty good. I locked Timmy outside for now. Not sure what to do with him at this point, but I'm not letting him in the house any time soon. That's for sure.

Update: I bathed Timmy following these directions (in the extended entry). I got him covered good in tomato juice and then hosed him down real good (in the snow, mind you). Furious doesn't begin to describe his mood. At once point, he crawled up on top of my back (using his claws, of course). His collar came off. He ran away 2 or 3 times. But I kept hauling him back. Then, I washed him in hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. He smells fine now. I toweled him off and let him back in the house. :)

Step 1 Don't let the cat in the house. Get it outside. They will roll & rub all over everything making this job 100 time worse. Deal with the problem outside if you can.

Step 2 Tomato Juice. With the cat safely secured outside ,run to the store & buy some BIG cans of CHEAP Tomato Juice.

Step 3 Get on some old clothes and gloves. An old jacket wouldn't hurt. Dress like you're going to string barbed wire.

Step 4 Trim the cats claws.

Step 5 Get the hose running.

Step 6 , Now cover the victim with the tomato juice. Let it sit on them for about 5 minutes & rinse with the hose. Repeat as needed

Step 7 Here is a mixture of common household items the works great.
1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
2 tbsp Dish Detergent (liquid mixes better)

Step 8 Mix it in a large plastic container, because it will foam up big time. this mixture is a oxygen generator. Wash the victim with this while it is still foaming, it neutralize the odor.
If you wait & it stops foaming it will not work. So mix it & wash the victor right away.

WARNING ,Don't try to store this in a closed container, it could explode.

Getting rid of the smell is going to take some time work & some $$$ , but with these common household ingredients you can cut down the smell by 90 to 95% , NOTHING is 100% effective in getting rid of the smell.

Your going to have to live with a bit of the smell for about a week , Get some Febreze spray , It is the best at masking or covering up the residual smell.
Febreze is a safe product & can be sprayed on furniture , carpets & clothes . you can even spray it on the animals & kids. Avoid getting it in their eyes , nose or mouth.

Finally, If you ever do come face to face with a skunk, don't freak out , Just move away . They really don't want to spray you , It is a last defense for them if they get attacked. They will run from you just as fast. The reason your pet got skunked is they surprised the skunk or they were try to play or attack the skunk. To a dog or cat a skunk is a black & white friend to play with !!!!
