Windows was unable to complete the disk check.
None of my computers handles USB drives very well. Plugging in or unplugging USB drives almost invariably causes the PC's to lock up, which is maddening. Just maddening. Finally, I got it so hosed up on Jennifer's desktop that it corrupted a folder so that it can't be viewed in Windows Explorer. I tried checking the drive for errors under windows, but got the message:
"Windows was unable to complete the disk check."
Ouch. So, I tried Start - Run - Cmd - chkdsk /f c:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.C:\Documents and Settings\Rob>chkdsk /f c:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) YThis volume will be checked the next time the system restarts.
So now, I'll reboot and see if that fixes it.
Update: That fixed it. It ran the chkdsk, found an error in the indexes, repaired it, cycled the computer, re-ran the chkdsk. Found no errors the 2nd time. Cycled itself again, and booted back into XP. The folder was there with the missing files. Two of them were hosed, so I just deleted them. But I'm back in business now. :)
