Today's Jeep Ride - 7/6/2023
So today, I went for a little ride in the Jeep. I think my ride was something like this.
- At Mile Marker 258.0, on the south side of Clear Creek is an old abandoned mining town composed of several separate buildings that have fallen into disrepair.
- At Mile Marker 258.2, on the north side of US Highway 6 is an open mine.
- At Mile Marker 258.5, on the south side of US Highway 6 and the south side of Clear Creek is an abandoned mine, but it has a padlock keeping the door from opening.
- At Mile Marker 259.9, on the north side of US Highway 6 is an abandoned mine, but the entrance has been bricked in.
Then, at the intersection of US Hwy 6 and Colorado State Hwy 119, I turn north and ride up to the southern city limits of Black Hawk. Here, I park the Jeep, cross North Clear Creek, and climb up to the Pewabic Mine entrance.
The mine was open and reads "PEWABIC TUNNEL". The mine is open for roughly 80 steps into the mine and then it ends at a crack. It is probably possible to continue, but I turned back.
Then, I went up though Black Hawk and Central City, through the ghost town of Nevadaville, then up to Bald Mountain Cemetery, and up to York Gulch. Then, down York Gulch to Fall River Road. I turn around at Fall River Road, reset the odometer, and climb up through York Gulch again. I stopped at the following mines as I climbed back up York Gulch:
York Gulch at Fall River Road: Odometer = 0.0
Going up York Gulch.
At 0.4 miles, there are two open mines. One on each side of the road. The mine of the north side goes in 75 steps. The mine on the south side of the road goes in 22 steps.
At 0.5 miles, there is an abandoned house.
At 0.6 miles, there is another mine on the west side. It goes in for 80 steps.
At 0.7 miles, there are two open mines on the east side that go nowhere.
On York Gulch, just below Chinook Road, there are two open mines on the east side. 1st goes in 6-10 steps. 2nd goes in 10 feet.
Going up Fall River Road (from I-70):
615 Fall River Road - There is one mine on the east side of Fall River Road at 615 Fall River Road.
651 Fall River Road - There is one mine on the east side of Fall River Road at 651 Fall River Road.
801 Fall River Road - There is one mine on the east side of Fall River Road at 801 Fall River Road.
841 Fall River Road - There is one hole/cave on the east side of Fall River Road at 841 Fall River Road but it goes nowhere.
